Balmain Hospital

This photo clearly wasn’t taken this weekend as there isn’t a drop of water in sight! This is the Balmain Hospital, located in Sydney’s inner west. This lovely building was one of the first cottage hospital developments in Sydney.

It was opened on the 10 August, 1885 by the then Premier of NSW, Sir Alexander Stuart. At the time it served a community composed of mostly dock workers, boiler makers, engineers and ship builders who occupied the Balmain peninsula in small cottages.

After a humble beginning of only 4 beds, all for male patients, it still operates today and has grown to employ over 250 staff and has almost 100 beds with multiple wards. This is a Balmain institution and has been important contributor to the Balmain community now for over 130 years. Stay dry Sydney!
